Everyone knows the hit film “Titanic,” which depicts the fated trip of the ocean liner that struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage April 14, 1912. The love story of Jack and Rose has become almost iconic over the past two decades, sending the film to gross over $1.85 billion worldwide and a legion of fans who still watch it over and over again. Why this film has continued to captivate audiences around the world is clear. It’s masterfully directed, beautifully shot and mixes fiction with historical moments that ring true to today’s audiences.

For example, who couldn’t connect to Rose who was forced to make a decision between what society expected of her and what her heart desired? Despite the tragedy that took place around her, it was her choice to live for herself that transformed the character over the course of her three hour journey. While the sinking did have an impact, it was Jack Dawson played by Leonardo DiCaprio who was the catalyst to Rose’s growth.

The history of making the “Titanic” is known for its struggles behind the scenes. Not only was the film the most expensive made at the time at $200 million, but it ran over schedule and over budget. Besides that, James Cameron ended up delivering a FIVE HOUR first cut to the studio which resulted in some serious hand ringing on whether audiences would have the patience for a film of that length. Thankfully, many subplots were dropped and the film was cut to a more modest 3 hours and 15 minutes.

“Titanic” would go on to be nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, and won eleven of those nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. It was a true Hollywood success story that would go on to withstand the tests of time. Even its 3D re-release to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking would gross and additional $345 million worldwide.

Another great fact about this film, is it skyrocketed many actors and actresses to critical acclaim and provided them with a platform to be Hollywood royalty. Both Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have gone on to have extremely successful careers, with even smaller players benefiting from modest success.
