Bonnaroo was named one of the “50 Moments That Changed Rock & Roll” by Rolling Stones magazine. Notable performers of this music festival include Kanye West, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Jay-Z, and James Brown. The first Bonnaroo concert took place in 2002, and it was a success, despite not having a huge mainstream act. Although it didn’t have any traditional advertising, the event sold out in just two weeks. Taking inspiration from music festivals like Coachella, “Bonnaroo has revolutionized the modern rock festival,” according to The New York Times. Last year’s event featured Kanye West, Elton John, Skrillex, and Jack White.
Kanye West’s 2008 performance at Bonnaroo was met with a lot of controversy. West didn’t appear on stage until 4:30am, several hours later than he was scheduled. His set was significantly cut short, and West blamed the festival organizers for the ordeal. The organizers argued Kanye West showed up late to the event. In the end, both sides agreed to put their differences aside, and West was invited back to Bonnaroo in 2014. Despite the alleged reconciliation, West went on a rant against organizers and some of the fans. “Last time before I got here they had f*** Kanye on the port-a-potties. This time we’re going to pi** on them.” West’s infamous rants on stage were met with boos from the audience. Only time will tell if Kanye West will ever be invited to Bonnaroo again.
