Alt-scene stalwarts Brand New have added Philly emo revivalists The Weaks to their spring tour. Brand New recently announced the eight-date tour to coincide with their cross-country trip from their home state of New York to California’s Coachella festival. Circa Survive, also hailing from Philadelphia, will join The Weaks and Brand New on select dates; Desaparecidos, the sometime side project and sometime main focus of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, will be joining the tour package on other specified dates.
PropertyofZack, a blog primarily covering goings on in the alternative scene, reported Brand New’s announcement this morning, while The Weaks offered their own take on their Facebook page. The young Philly outfit, with just a couple years and only 1,200 “likes” under their belts, released a statement early this afternoon saying, in part: “Holy shit. We’re going on tour with Brand New. Desaparecidos and Circa Survive on shows too… We’ll also be adding a ton of shows around this, but more on that later!”
Additionally, The Weaks recently announced an upcoming performance at the Skate & Surf festival in Asbury Park, NJ. The band was also part of a recently released six-way split with Spraynard, Modern Baseball, Marietta, Hurry, and Beach Slang. The split, entitled Strength in Weakness, was put out by Lame-O Records in January; proceeds from the album are being donated to United Cerebral Palsy, a non-profit organization intended to benefit sufferers of the eponymous disease.
For Brand New’s part, this seemingly unlikely pairing is actually a relatively typical move. The band is known for bringing small or up-and-coming acts out on tour with them, the presumably intended result being the rapid growth of the fanbase of whatever small act is lucky enough to join them. It is also worth noting that Brand New rarely tours, and that their tours tend to sell out in entirety almost instantaneously. That, according to The Weaks, “three of [the] shows haven’t sold out yet,” is somewhat remarkable.
Brand New is expected to release an album this year and have teased new material for some time now. The outfit is apparently in the studio, tracking this new effort, but will be taking time off in the spring to tour. The Weaks are continuously touring behind their most recent effort, The World Is A Terrible Place & I Hate Myself & Want To Die.
