If you have ever wondered what it would look like for Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and The Breakfast Club’s John Bender (Judd Nelson) to sing “Uptown Funk,” then look no further. Those two films join 278 others in a compilation spliced together to portray the track by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.
The 280 flicks were arranged by YouTube user dondrapersayswhat over the course of three months, according to the video’s description. The creator has also made 263 movies sing Public Enemy‘s “Bring the Noise,” 280 movies sing Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby,” 295 movies sing Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and an arrangement sing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”
The clips used for “Uptown Funk” span a number of decades from the ‘50s (1957’s An Affair to Remember) to present day (2013’s This is the End). Other notable appearances include blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises, American Pie, Happy Gilmore, Scarface and Animal House as well as cult classics such as Pulp Fiction, Office Space, SLC Punk! and Garden State. Several animated characters also jump in on the action such as Pooh (Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin), Shrek and Puss in Boots (the Shrek series), Timon (The Lion King), Mushu (the Mulan series) and Gill (Finding Nemo).
The creator used word play with some of the cameos by cutting The Outsiders’ “Stay gold, Ponyboy” to fit into Ronson’s “Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold” and How To Train Your Dragon for “Make a dragon wanna retire, man.” It also uses the classic Beetlejuice line “Say my name” for “Say my name you know who I am” and Fat Albert’s “Hey, Hey, Hey” for “Don’t believe me just watch / Hey, hey, hey, oh.” The video also takes advantage of the instrumental interludes to feature band and dance performances from Back to the Future, Airplane!, Napoleon Dynamite, Pretty in Pink, Purple Rain and Mac & Me.
“Uptown Funk” was premiered as the first single in mid-November of last year. It appeared on Ronson’s fourth full-length, UpTown Special, which was released this past January via RCA Records. “Uptown Funk” reached platinum status March 6, just four months after its release. At the time of this article, the single has been on the Billboard charts for 37 weeks, peaking at No. 1 in its eighth week on “The Hot 100.”
The track is currently up for a Teen Choice Award in the “Choice Song: Male Artist,” “Choice Music: Party Song,” and “Choice Music: Collaboration” categories as well as the MTV Music Video Awards for “Video of the Year,” “Best Male Video,” “Best Pop Video” “Best Direction” and “Best Collaboration.” The awards shows air August 16 at 8 p.m. on FOX and August 30 at 9 p.m. on MTV respectively.
Since “Uptown Funk,” Ronson has released videos for his next two singles: “Feel Right” featuring Mystikal and “I Can’t Lose” featuring Keyone Starr. Ronson is currently on tour in the U.K.
