Bulimia is an unfortunate disorder that is a lot more common than you might think. In fact, there’s a long list of celebrities who have struggled with the problem in the past. Here are the most famous people on that list.
Number Seven: Paula Abdul’s Struggles with Bulimia
Paula mentioned in a 1995 interview that she had been fighting bulimia for almost 20 years and had partaken in therapy to help deal with her problem. She blames the disorder on her tendency toward perfectionism and the harsh competition as a dancer with very thin dancers.
Number Six: Russell Brand
We know him from the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall but he has been around for a while longer than that in the UK as a stand-up comic. Russell began binge-eating and throwing up at the young age of 11 and says he thought it was quite “euphoric.”
Number Five: Melanie C
We know her from the Spice Girls, of course. Melanie C says that with the quick rise to fame also came the attention on the size of her body and her own paranoia about it.
Number Four: Margaret Cho
Margaret Cho is an actress, comedian, and author who has always been outspoken about drugs, disorders, and her bisexuality. She has fought with both anorexia and bulimia in the past.
Number Three: Princess Diana
The stresses of constantly being in the public eye put a lot of strain on the Princess that led her to the disorder as a coping mechanism. She told about her struggles in an interview, describing the disorder as an escape mechanism.
Number Two: Jane Fonda
Fonda says she learned the ropes of bulimia in school and became bulimic as an actress and model at just 21 years old. When she began her workout videos at age 26, her struggles ended for the most part.
Number One: Elton John
Elton John was very famous for his flashy clothes and well-known radio hits and albums. Once his stardom began to decline, however, John found other sources of stimulation such as alcohol, drugs and food. He went to treatment for alcoholism, drugs, and bulimia in the ’90s.
