Remember when you couldn’t escape the undeniable bubble pop sweetness of the massive hit “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen? It’s hard to forget a time when I didn’t hear that song everywhere and Jepsen was being billed as the next big thing by producer of all the pop heavy weights Scooter Braun. While I can easily say I don’t miss the constant spinning of that record or seeing everywhere on social media, I believe Jepsen’s sophomore effort Kiss was pretty underrated for having singles as successful as “Call Me Maybe” and “Good Time”.
Inspired by the era of colorful outfits, big hair and synth driven pop (also known as the 80s), Kiss included countless catchy hooks, a few emotional ballads to change up the pace and production from some of the biggest names in pop music (Matthew Koma, Max Martin, Scooter Braun and Dallas Austin to name a few). While songs like “This Kiss” or “Tiny Little Bows” will sadly never receive single treatment, Carly Rae Jepsen is ready to give us another collection of pop records with her third studio album Emotion, which dropped on June 24, 2015.
“E-Mo-Tion” is the release in advance of the album and it has Carly Rae Jepsen returning to 80s territory. Feeling a little more grown and suggestive, the Canadian songstress pours out her thoughts and a bottle of tequila for her babe, “Be tormented by me babe / Wonder / Wonder how I do / How’s the weather / Am I better / Better now that there’s no you?” The catchiness is instant and Jepsen’s voice sounds as playful and still weirdly childlike as ever (Seriously Carly doesn’t age). With a moderate hit from this era under her belt, (The song where Carly Rae Jepsen really, really, really likes someone) I would love to see “E-Mo-Tion” make an impact on the radio. In the meantime you could always fantasize about Jepsen and dream about your future with her (At least that’s what Carly Rae Jepsen is instructing you do on the perfectly crafted hook).
