If you’re between the ages of thirteen and twenty-four, live in the Chicago area, and are a Chance the Rapper fan, then June 24th is your lucky day. At Chicago’s Northerly Island Chance the Rapper is holding a free festival called Teens in the Park, that will boast performances by Donnie Trumpet, Logan, DLow, DJ CHANTÉ, Open Mike, and other artists handpicked by Chance the Rapper. The city sponsored event is being emceed by the rapper Phenom and will also feature break-dancing, graffiti art, and jewelry-making, along with several other interactive activities, as well as both concessions and refreshments. “The Chicago Park District is so excited to come together with other essential Chicago youth-centered organizations to create an event featuring local musical artists and experiential learning for teens. It’s this type of collaboration that shows teens the wide variety of exciting opportunities that exist in our great city,” said director of marketing for the Chicago Park District, Michelle Geddes. You can currently register for the three hour long festival via Live Nation, but be sure to do so before the festival to ensure you receive your free passes, as spots are filling up quickly. Chance the Rapper was recently involved in his band’s, The Social Experiment, solo debut album, Surf, which dropped late last month as a free download via iTunes Exclusive. Due to Chance the Rapper’s heavily involvement with the album, he not only contributed vocals to the album but worked on some of the arrangements as well, Surf was downloaded over six-hundred thousand times i’s first week and had more than ten million individual track downloads. Not only was it praised for it eclectic influences, such as neo-soul, jazz, and hip hop, but also for its live instrumentation.
The Social Experiment isn’t the only collaboration he’s been involved with since the 2013 release of his second mixtape. He has worked with the likes of SZA, Skrillex, Pia Mia, James Blake, Chug Inglish, Childish Gambino, Donnie Trumpet, and Justin Bieber. Even Pitch Perfect 2’s Anna Kendrick is noticing this twenty-two year old’s talent. During a recent interview for “Popcorn with Peter Travers” she said, “There’s a song — it’s the only song that’s in my head — I don’t know the woman who does the hook of the song, but it’s a song [by] Chance the Rapper, and I don’t know the woman singing the hook, but I just love her voice,” before doing a short rendition of Jamila Woods’ hook on “Sunday Candy.”
