Charlie Puth is continuing to build his music career, which began when he uploaded a cover of Adele‘s “Someone Like You” on YouTube in 2011. Puth’s cover earned him nationwide attention, including an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. His appearance on the talk show, earned Puth a roster spot on DeGeneres’ record label eleveneleven. Although the record deal didn’t work out, the singer-songwriter was able to capitalize off of the experience.
“Ellen is definitely an amazing person, but sometimes things don’t work out. I can’t be too upset though, these two appearances got me my international [fan] base and shot my YouTube subscribers up,” he told Billboard magazine. Puth added, “Actually, the show first got my publisher’s attention, so it was still a really wonderful experience. One of the best things from it is that it actually inspired me to write more music for myself.”
This year, the singer released his first single, “Marvin Gaye,” featuring Meghan Trainor. “Meghan and I were at a party one night, and we were exchanging the new music, and she heard Marvin Gaye. She asked who else was singing on it. [Trainor said] It should be a duet. Let me sing on it,” Puth told Billboard. He continued, “So I’m like, ok. Meghan Trainor just asked me to sing on my song, absolutely! In one day, she knew the whole song. We did it all in one take.”
Puth also has a song with Wiz Khalifa entitled “See You Again,” which is featured on the Furious 7 soundtrack. “See You Again” has already become a hit, and the rapper and Puth have an upcoming performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. “It’s crazy. I knew it was gonna be big, but I didn’t expect it to grow so quickly. I really love that people love it,” the singer said.
Charlie Puth is writing and producing for several major players in the music industry including Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, and Jason Derulo. “I try to incorporate little bits of me and treat it like my song at first. When Trey cut Slow Motion, he put his own little melodic twist. He Trey Songz-ified it,” Puth jokingly stated. Puth said Trey Songz’s “Slow Motion” is already catching on. Charlie Puth told Billboard magazine that he recently went to one of the R&B singer’s shows, and more than 15,000 people were singing along with Songz.
