Chris Evans Wants to Renew Contract With Marvel

Chris Evans will soon don the stars and stripes for the fifth time (not including cameos) in the upcoming 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. Following that film, he’s scheduled for the next two Avengers films (The Avengers: Infinity War, Parts 1 & 2), after which his contract with Marvel ends.

Speculation suggests Marvel might focus on new characters following Infinity War, or even recast key roles, such as Captain America or Iron Man. But in a recent interview, Evans made it clear that he’s willing, and even eager, to continue playing Captain America after his contract ends. He said the following:

“Listen, if Marvel wants me they got me. I’ve never had such a relationship where you have such—I mean look at my resume, I’m used to being on set being like, ‘Ah is this movie gonna be terrible?’ Marvel just can’t stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. It’s wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and it’s like a playground as an actor.” This represents a complete paradigm shift for Chris Evans, since he famously hesitated to take the role in the first place. Thankfully he accepted the multi-picture deal, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger.

Later in the interview, Evans expressed disbelief of the idea that he would ever hesitate to work with Marvel. He emphasized repeatedly that he would never forgive himself had he not taken the role as Captain America. And I’m sure most of us are just as glad that he took the job. Hopefully Marvel takes the hint and signs on Chris Evans for a new contract.

Captain America: Civil War, hits theaters May 6, 2016. It stars Chris Evans as Captain America, with co-star Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. In addition to these two Marvel superstars, the film will also feature Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Holland. Holland will play Spider-man, marking the character’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
