Singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett revealed she is finally releasing her first album in March. The LP will be entitled Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. It will be released on March 20 in Germany and Australia, March 23 in the UK and March 24 in the US. The lead single from the project, “Pedestrian At Best,” was just released and the music video for the single also premiered online a few days ago.
The singer discussed a few details about the songs on her new album with Stereogum a while ago. “It’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some of them are ultra-poppy and some are really heavy, but that kinda happens within the EPs too, I suppose,” the singer told Stereogum. She continued, “The album is essentially just songs that I’ve written over the past year [2013] so it represents where my mind has been over the past year.” Barnett continued, “It’s unrealistic to think people stick to one wavelength. It’s got the ups and downs that everyone has- the emotional, life things.” Barnett’s music has been described as being “reminiscent of early 1990s indie rock.” The indie rock singer addressed the comparisons during her Stereogum interview. “I grew up with Nirvana and a few other bands, but basically that was it. My brother and I only had a handful of CDs, and Nirvana was the main bunch of them.”
In 2012, the indie rocker stated her own label, Milk! Records. The label produced her first project, an EP entitled I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris. Garnett’s sophomore EP, How To Carve A Carrot into A Rose, helped the singer gain international attention in 2013. Pitchfork Media named the the EP’s lead single, “Avant Gardener,” Best New Track of 2013. That same year Barnett dropped the critically acclaimed The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas.
Barnett will be performing at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival for three days this month in Australia; Adelaide on the 6th, Melbourne on the 7th, and Fremantle on the 8th. She recently announced more shows on her website, including a performance at South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas on March 8th. The singer has additional dates in North America this Spring.
