Daft Punk is one of the most successful electronic music groups of all time. They continue to reinvent themselves – maybe even more times than you know about. Check out part one of this list below and check back soon for part two.
Number Fifteen: They Have Been Making Music Longer Than You Probably Realize – But Not Always As Daft Punk. Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter – the Frenchman who make up Daft Punk – have been making music together since the early nineties. But before they were Daft Punk, they went by the name Darlin, and their music had much less of a disco/house sound than it does now.
Number Fourteen: They Changed Their Name to Daft Punk Because of a Review. When they put out one of their first releases as Darlin, an English review characterized their music as “daft punky trash.” They loved the way the words sounded so much that they changed their name – and the rest is history.
Number Thirteen: They’re Not Be the Biggest Fans of will.i.am. The vocalist and songwriter wanted to use a sample of Daft Punk’s “Around the World,” but they denied him access to it because they didn’t like the sound it of.
Number Twelve: They Originally Wanted to Keep the Number of Copies of Their Album Homework Extremely Limited. They only hoped to release 50,000 copies of the record. The record label didn’t love the idea for obvious reasons.
Number Eleven: Their Video for “Technologic” Includes an Appearance from Chucky. And yes, we mean Chucky the doll from the horror movies of the same name.
Number Ten: They Paid for the Recording of Their Most Recent Album. The recording of their hugely successful Random Access Memories was paid for out their own pockets. They were already pretty damn successful at the time, so it probably wasn’t too painful to dish out the dollars. Nonetheless, it has surely paid for itself a hundred times over by now.
Number Nine: They Were Childhood Friends. It makes sense that their musical sensibilities would line up so nicely, as Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been friends since they were twelve years old. That’s it for part one, but check back for more Daft Punk info, coming soon.
