Destiny’s Child: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Destiny’s Child is one of the most well-known girl groups of the 1990s. The group, which included the now-iconic Beyonce, had a fruitful career that allowed the members to pursue individual careers later on. While much of Destiny’s Child’s story has been made public, there are still some things about the group that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of 15 things you probably didn’t know about Destiny’s Child. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: Before They Were Singers, They Were Rappers. Destiny’s Child was originally a rap group, and they called themselves Girls Tyme. They were even featured on Star Search! However, they did not get a deal as rappers, so they transitioned into Destiny’s Child.

Number Fourteen: Beyonce Had a Huge Fear of Falling. During their first Grammy Awards performance, Beyonce was terrified that she would fall. They performed in 2001, and Beyonce said, “…we were terrified…We were so nervous.”

Number Thirteen: Their First LP Kinda Flopped. Destiny’s Child’s first LP was self-titled and peaked at number 67 on the charts. The LP did end up going Platinum; however, it was by no means a huge success.

Number Twelve: They Never Acted Together. Though the group did a lot of things together, one of them was not acting. However, they all did their own separate acting endeavors.

Number Eleven: They Recorded a Song for Disney. Solange, Beyonce’s sister, teamed up with Destiny’s Child to record the theme song for the Disney animated series The Proud Family. The Proud Family premiered in 2001, and it may be the only time Beyonce can be heard performing backup vocals for her sister.

Number Ten: “Bills, Bills, Bills” Was Co-Written by Kandi Burruss. Former Xscape member and reality television star Kandi Burruss actually helped write several of Destiny Child’s best hits, including “Bills, Bills, Bills.”

Number Nine: One of Their Biggest Hits Was Inspired by a Joke. Though “Survivor” has become a feminist anthem, it was actually inspired by a “survival of the fittest” joke made by a radio DJ.
