When we last heard Fall Out Boy, they were aiming to Save Rock and Roll. Now it seems that they’re trying to save the 90’s – the band released “Centuries” today, a get-pumped-for-battle tune from their upcoming album. Here’s why it’s also haunting and catchy: Suzanne Vega’s du-du-doo-du from “Tom’s Diner” has been siphoned out and strewn throughout the track.
“I feel like it was so ubiquitous when we were kids,” lead singer Patrick Stump said of the sampled song. “I mean, that song was absolutely everywhere and it just kind of disappeared. I haven’t heard it in a minute. And I was like that’s a shame.”
While some long-time fans might have been holding out for the return of the band’s early 2000s style (remember those super-long song titles that were actually easter-egg quotes from movies?), it’s actually very similar to “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark,” the first track FOB debuted after their five-year silence. Even Vega’s echoing signature hook (opening and closing the song), fills the role of the vocally trumpeted anthem riff opening and closing “My Songs Know.”
The song has been available for less than 24 hours, but a music video (a hyperlapse montage of Chicago, the band’s hometown) is already up on Vevo and Youtube. Recent fans of the band’s pop style and those hold-out-ers alike have responded (pretty positively) all over social media.
Fall Out Boy debuted their first album, Take This To Your Grave, in 2003. Their two breakthrough hits, “Sugar, We’re Going Down,” and “Dance, Dance” rocketed them to double-platinum and mega-popularity in 2005. They appeared at Warped Tour and South by Southwest and released two more albums, From Under the Cork Tree and Infinity on High. Their fourth effort, Folie a Deux, was produced during a series of member-to-member conflicts, and was released to mixed and negative reactions. The band temporarily split in 2009 and sent members into little-known solo careers. But the hiatus, according to Andy Hurley “helped them all kind of figure themselves out… Especially Joe and Patrick, who were so young. And Pete (Wentz) is a million times better.” In 2013, their reunion lead single “My Songs Know” made 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and their music videos for every song on the fifth album (Save Rock and Roll) also met with success. There’s no word on the exact premiere date (or title) of the sixth album.
