First We Had Grumpy Cat, Now Meet Grumpy Puppy

It’s no secret that humans love cute animals. Case in point: this post. The appeal is obvious. Next to babies, animals are just about the cutest things on earth (besides Chris Pratt, of course). However, what’s actually kind of puzzling is why we seem to love the animals that appear to have perpetually made the mistake of waking up on the wrong side of the bed so darn much. Why is an attitude that’s annoying in humans so attractive in an animal?

Alas, the finer points of human neurology are beyond me. At the end of the day, it’s not really important why we find the animals that we find cute cute, it’s finding a new supply of animals to gawk over. Without further ado, I present to you the newest grumpy animal: Grumpy Puppy, or as his friends like to call him, Earl.

Earl is a second generation Puggle (the adorable name for a pug-beagle mix) and even though he’s only 5-months-old he’s already over anything you’ve ever said to him or ever will say to him. And like almost every human who suffers from resting bitch face, Earl was just born with his mean mug.

“He has had the grumpy expression from day one,” Derek Bloomefield, Earl’s owner said. “The vet said he’s as healthy as any other puppy. He just looks grumpy because of his under-bite, wrinkles, and dark complexion.” Sure, that’s what they all say.

While the advent of a new competitor in the grumpy market is sure to sink Grumpy Cat further into the dumps, is it so wrong to think that the two animals could eventually join forces, creating a squad of their own? Maybe it’s too much to hope for, but I like to think we live in the kind of world where anything is possible. Until that blessed day occurs, follow Earl’s ascent into stardom on Facebook.
