It’s been well over two years since Foals released their third full-length album Holy Fire, but today, the UK-based indie rock band have finally revealed the details of their forthcoming record. Out via Transgressive Records/Warner Music, the new album will be titled What Went Down, and will be released later this summer, on August 28th.
The album was produced and recorded in France, along with producer James Ford (who has worked with the likes of fellow Brits Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Jessie Ware and Arctic Monkeys). Along with the announcement, the band also shared the album’s accompanying cover art, as well as a short trailer.
Whilst describing the album’s nature, frontman Yannis Phillippakis said “I wanted to tap into my inner madman and feel like I was channelling some sort of fevered creature”. He went onto say “I wanted to relish the mania, and what ended up happening – looking back at certain passages in some songs – is pretty intense in a way that I wouldn’t have ever been able to plan”. The same level of intensity that Phillippakis speaks of, is pictured in the trailer; as shots of a raging dog/animal is seen thundering through, whilst other clips show the band performing with a similar kind of drive and hunger.
What Went Down will feature ten brand new songs, the lead single which is also titled “What Went Down” will be premiered by Annie Mac on her Radio 1 show on June 16th. The track will then be available to download shortly after its debut. The full track-listing for the record is as follows: 1. “What Went Down”. 2. “Mountain at My Gates”. 3. “Birch Tree”. 4. “Give It All”. 5. “Albatross”. 6. “Snake Oil”. 7. “Night Swimmers”. 8. “London Thunder”. 9. “Lonely Hunter”. 10. “A Knife in the Ocean”.
Foals will also be playing a number of live shows and festivals around Europe, including appearances at Spain’s Low Festival on the 26th of July, Slovakia’s Grape Festival on the 14th of August before closing out the summer at Poland’s Krakow Live Festival on the 20th of August. It will be interesting to see how the new material will translate to the live setting, and even more so, to see what direction the band go in next. What Went Down will be available for pre-order June 16th.
