The famous Austin based Fun Fun Fun Festival announced a provocative lineup today which featured some very interesting musicians. The three day festival will take place from November 7th to the 9th at Austin’s Auditorium Shores and Butler Park. This marks the ninth iteration of the quickly growing festival.
The festival divides itself into three stages: Orange, Blue, and Black which prevents the lesser known artists from being eclipsed by the more famous bands present. A fourth non-musical stage called the Comedy stage will be announced July 1st. Action sports are also said to be heavily featured.
Heavy-Metal icons Judas Priest are the main heavy hitters with Neutral Milk Hotel, Death Cab for Cutie, Wiz Khalifa, and Nas assisting in star power. Independent artists include cult favorite Girl Talk, Alt-J, Yo La Tengo, Iceage, Death Grips, Guided by Voices, and more than 80 others. Nas’s presence is particularly interesting as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of his debut hit album Illmatic.
Fun Fun Fun Fest has often been an opportunity for independent artists to emerge into the national spotlight. Started in 2006, the festival acts not just as a musical showcase but a celebration of Austin’s culture. Mechanical bulls, live wrestling, and sexy saxophone players are just a few of the wonders to expect to see. The most interesting by far is the 2012 addition of the Taco Cannon. In reality a reworked t-shirt launcher, the cannon is designed to shoot tacos up to 200 feet in the air. It is the first and only taco launcher on the planet.
The festival hit a stride two years ago when it hosted the reunion performance of pioneering rap group Run DMC. This year boasts more famous musicians than any one before it, turning the Fun Fun Fun festival one of most important musical events of the year.
Three day passes are available now at the festival’s main website.
