Game of War: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our list of 15 things you probably did not know about Game of War, and now we’re back with part two! Check out eight more fascinating facts about the wildly popular freemium mobile game that you definitely (probably) did not know below. You might be surprised by what you find out!

Number Eight: It’s Widely Regarded as Terrible. Despite its popularity and all the money it’s been able to spend on advertising, the game itself is widely regarded as objectively bad and has a high turnaround rate to support this statement.

Number Seven: There’s No Real War in the Game. Despite the fact that the game is called “Game of War,” there’s no actual fighting involved. The game is all about gathering as many resources as possible.

Number Six: One of the Game Developers’s Executives Was Arrested. The executive worked for Machine Zone, which is the company that developed Game of War: Fire Age. The employee’s name is Jing Zeng, and he was arrested for stealing information about the game’s user behavior.

Number Five: Players Can Use the Game’s Translation System to Get Ahead. In order to let players from different backgrounds play the game together, Game of War uses a translation system powered by both Google Translate and Microsoft. If players help improve the translations effectively, they earn “funds” that they can cash in for resources.

Number Four: The Game Continues When It’s Not Being Used. And we don’t mean that in an obvious way. Though other players are obviously allowed to play whenever they want, if a user decides to choose a particularly long quest, the quest will continue after he or she closes the game.

Number Three: It Employs a Lot of Psychology. Though we already mentioned the game is widely regarded as terrible, its developers are actually quite brilliant. The game features countless opportunities for players to experience a little “high” by opening a new treasure chest or finding a new resource.

Number Two: It’s Anything But Free. The game promotes itself as being a freemium game; however, most people end up spending some amount of money after playing it. In fact, the $99.99 package Game of War offers is its most popular one.

Number One: It Might Be the Future of Gameplay. Freemium games are becoming more and more popular as a way for companies to make money from unsuspecting consumers, and Game of War is no exception. Though the game itself might not have a ton of substance, its format and advertising strategy have helped it reach new levels of popularity nearly unprecedented in a mobile role-playing game.
