Gin: Top 10 Health Benefits (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our list of the top 10 health benefits of drinking gin, and now we’re back with part two! Check out five more fascinating perks of drinking gin that you definitely (probably) weren’t aware of. You might be surprised by what you find out!

Number Five: It Helps Your Liver. Though the liver is often the first organ to go for people who are alcoholics, the diuretic properties of juniper berries in gin can theoretically help with liver disease! However, if you’re an alcoholic already, drinking more booze might not be the best idea.

Number Four: It’s the Healthiest Type of Alcohol. Because of all of the herbs present, it’s probably technically the healthiest type of alcohol you can drink (among hard liquors, anyway). While vodka, rum, tequila, and whiskey all lack an abundance of botanical herbs, gin is flush with herbs, including coriander, cassia, nutmeg, sage, and rosemary, making it especially “natural” and beneficial for your body.

Number Three: It Improves Your Skin. The herbs in gin contain a plethora of antioxidants that help to prevent your skin from aging. Drinking it can contribute to both cellular restoration and skin improvement over time. However, note that you must drink barrel-aged gin to enjoy these benefits. Regular gin has almost no antioxidants.

Number Two: It Extends Your Life Span. Gin can help keep you young for two reasons. The first is that drinking it will help improve your blood circulation, especially as you get older, and the second is that it contains flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of compounds that have been proven to be helpful in preventing aging, and they are also beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Number One: It’s a Low-Calorie Option. We won’t say that drinking gin will definitely make you lose weight, but it certainly won’t hurt! The juniper-forward alcohol is one of the lowest-calorie options when it comes to alcohol. Thanks to the herbs and lack of sugar, it’s a great option for people watching their weight. Just be sure to choose a martini or mix it with seltzer, as tonic has a lot of sugar in it. We hope you enjoyed our list!
