Iggy Azalea‘s return to social media hasn’t been as smooth as she would have hoped. A fan contacted her on social media and stated that the single “Pretty Girls” (with Britney Spears) flopped a little bit. The rapper responded,”It’s difficult to send a song up the charts without additional promo and TV performances etc. unfortunately I’m just featured.” Azalea’s comments were taken as disrespectful and Pop Zone tweeted that the rapper was throwing shade at Britney Spears and her team. Azalea answered Pop Zone by tweeting,”My comment is factual, it applies to any song. I don’t have to suck the womans [sic] asshole 24/7 to be her friend, do I? Bye girls.” “Pretty Girls” has achieved moderate success since its release last month. It reached Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, Number 23 on Mainstream Top 40, and Number 5 on the Hot Dance Club Songs. The music video for the single has received over 79 million views on YouTube.
Azalea has dropped one studio album entitled The New Classic last year. The project peaked at Number 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Top Rap Albums, and the UK R&B Albums chart. The New Classic has also been certified Gold in the US, after shipping more than 500,000 copies. Five singles have been dropped from the album including “Work,” “Bounce,” “Change Your Life,” “Fancy,” and “Black Widow.” The single “Black Widow” (featuring Rita Ora) went to Number 1 in the US (Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs, Hot Dance Songs, Mainstream Top 40, Rhythmic, and Dance/Mix Show Airplay), UK (Official Charts Company), and Belgium (Ultratop 50 chart).
The rapper was scheduled to embark on her Great Escape Tour in September, but she canceled the tour late last month. Azalea stated that she had a “creative change of heart,” and she also blamed the cancellation on exhaustion. It has been a rough year for the rapper, and it seems she is still struggling to gain respect from her peers and people outside of the music industry. Azalea has been referred to as phony, homophobic, and racist. The homophobic and racist comments stem from past remarks the rapper made about homosexual, African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American people. She has since apologized for her disrespectful and hurtful comments, but the rapper is still striving to restore the public’s perception of her.
