During Grammy Weekend, producer Detail teased the possibility that a Jay Z–Beyonce collaborative album was in the works. The producer revealed to Billboard magazine that he was working on the full-length album, but he refused to reveal or confirm more information regarding the project. Unlike Detail, DJ Skee didn’t hesitate at all when he claimed Jay Z and Beyonce’s album will released this year. Even though no one from Jay Z or Beyonce’s camps have confirmed Skee’s claim, the DJ is certain the project will be released exclusively on Tidal.
The collaborative effort could be a significant boost for Tidal. The music and video streaming service has already dropped out of the iPhone Top 700 Downloads chart, since it was re-launched in March. Jay Z’s purchase of Tidal was made official last month, and he received support from the likes of Madonna, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Rihanna, Usher, Alicia Keys, and more. TIDAL’s co-owners Beyonce, Usher, and Jack White promised the music service would be able to compete with other music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora. In less than a month of its re-launch, Tidal has failed to attract music consumers.
Tidal has already fired its chief executive Andy Chen, and replaced him with Peter Tonstad. The company stated Tonstad has a better understanding of the music business. Perhaps Tidal needs to make some other changes as well. The streaming company’s biggest complaint by music listeners is Tidal’s $19.99 per month membership fee. Even though the fee may not sound too expensive, companies like Spotify only charge their listeners $9.99. Most importantly, the majority of streaming companies offer their services for free as well. Unfortunately, Tidal does not offer a free option, and their streaming service is not commercial-free either.
While music listeners have voiced their opinion about the problems with Tidal, some artists have publicly stated their dislike for the service as well. Death Cab for Cuties’ Ben Gibbard stated that having millionaires like Jay Z, Madonna, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift complain about losing money because of companies like Spotify, was a terrible marketing idea. “I think they totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires and propping them up onstage and then having them all complain about not being paid,” Gibbard stated to the Daily Beast.
