Justin Bieber has a new look-alike to contend with on the entertainment scene: Ruby Rose, the latest breakout star from the most current season of Orange Is the New Black. Rose is boyishly good-looking, she has roguishly short hair, she has tattoos, she wears t-shirts that show off her guns–and she has just a tiny bit of very soft, fine blond facial hair–so it is no wonder that the internet has been making hilarious comparisons between the 29-year old Australian model/actress and Justin Bieber lately.
After some social media interactions, the two doppelgängers finally met this past weekend at the Encore Beach Club at Wynn Lass Vegas, a private gathering of beautiful celebrities, and they shared proof of the encounter on Instagram. The meeting pushes the conversation surrounding Bieber and bi-curiosity to a whole new level.
Ruby Rose is an up-and-coming actress and VJ whose recent success with the premiere of the newest season of OITNB has catapulted her into a whole new level of fame. She is also part of a fresh onslaught of young celebrities, including Miley Cyrus, who are defying categories and choosing to identify as things like “gender neutral” or “gender fluid.” She claims to have been mistaken for Bieber on several occasions, and she recently told reporters, “Physically and mannerisms-wise, we’re very similar.”
“Gender fluidity is not really feeling like you’re at one end of the spectrum or the other,” Rose explains. “For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender. I have a lot of characteristics that would normally be present in a guy, and then less that would be present in a woman.”
OITNB is a comedy-drama series that premiered on Netflix in 2013. Inspired by the true life story of writer Piper Kerman, and chronicles the experiences of a diverse group of women in an all-female penitentiary. The show has received critical acclaim for its explorations of race, class and gender issues. Especially with the inclusion of Laverne Cox in the cast, the show has made a name for itself as representing variations on gender in progressive ways. The show is currently in its fourth season.
