Earlier this week, Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones, expressed a desire to get back in the recording studio as a group with the hopes of releasing a new album. Today (April 10), it seems as though the reunion has been approved by at least one other member of the band, lead guitarist Keith Richards. Although both men and several other members of the band are currently working on solo material, Richards revealed that the band has been discussing a reunion.
If the band does record an album, it will be their first since 2005’s A Bigger Bang, which was well received and peaked at the number 3 position on the Billboard 200. Though this will mark the first studio album from the band since 2005, they have been traveling the road extensively since the album’s release. Between 2005 and 2007, the Rolling Stones embarked upon the A Bigger Bang Tour in support of the album. In 2012, they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with another year-long tour.
Since then, the Rolling Stones have continued to tour, embarking on a tour in 2014 and another, the Zip Code Tour in 2015. The tour will take place between May and July, with stops across North America. The band has hinted that they may pull heavily from their 1971 album Sticky Fingersfor the performances. This would make sense, because the album is being re-released with additional content on May 31, 2015.
Although both Keith Richards and Mick Jagger have expressed an urge to get back in the studio, they did state that nothing is set in stone yet. “We’re talking about doing some recording after this tour, but there’s nothing definite.” Richards went on to explain, “we just threw out the idea.” If it was his decision though, things would move forward definitely. “I’d like to get the boys back in the studio again.”
Richards also explained that he has completed the recording of his solo album, but he is holding off on a release while the Rolling Stones are on tour. Currently, he thinks that it will hit shelves sometime around September, though he did reiterate that nothing was set in stone yet. This will be his third solo album, the first coming in 1988. If the Rolling Stones do hit the studio, it is possible that his album will be pushed back even further.
