Kendrick Lamar‘s new album will be released on March 23rd. The title and artwork have not been revealed, and the only song named on the 16-track list was “The Blacker the Berry.”
“The Blacker the Berry” was just dropped last month, and it has received rave reviews from music critics and fans. The song has also been compared to the late Tupac Shakur‘s revolutionary song “Holla If Ya Hear Me.” Noticeably missing from the new album’s track listing was Lamar’s “i,” which recently won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. The rapper’s second studio album (first major label debut) good kid, m.A.A.d city entered the Billboard 200 at Number 2. The platinum certified album released five singles including “The Recipe,” “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Backseat Freestyle,” “Poetic Justice,” and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.”
On July 2nd, Lamar will perform at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. The festival will run from July 2nd through 5th, and it will also feature Mary J. Blige, Usher, Missy Elliott, Erykah Badu, Common, and Kevin Hart. The hip hop recording artist will also be a headliner at the 2015 Wireless Festival in London, which will take place on July 3rd through the 5th. Lamar, Avicii, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and David Guetta will headline the event. Mary J. Blige, Pusha T, A$AP Rocky, Major Lazer, Jessie J, and August Alsina are some of the other artists on the festival lineup list.
Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige will be quite busy in July, with performances at the Essence and Wireless Festival in the same week. Blige will also perform at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. The Tribeca Film Festival will be held in New York on April 15th through the 26th. The R&B singer’s London Sessions documentary will make its debut at the festival as well. The film followed Blige’s journey in the studio, which included her recording and writing sessions with Sam Smith and Disclosure.
The London Sessions project was the R&B singer’s thirteenth studio album, and it peaked at Number 1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. London Sessions produced four singles, “Therapy,” “Right Now,” “Whole Damn Year,” and “Long Hard Look.” Blige said that she went to the United Kingdom to record the album, because she felt like the UK has a greater appreciation for R&B music. The singer also stated the album gave her a sense of renewal, and it pushed her to a new level creatively.
