Here comes another great divide. After Gwen and Gavin, Affleck and Garner, and most recently, Malik and Perrie, we bear witness to yet another earth-shattering breakup in Hollywood. Prepare to despair, because one of the most beloved couples of our childhood, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, is no more.
The couple announced their split two days ago. Both muppets released their respective statements on the matter, similarly asking their fans for understanding and respecting their privacy. However, there was one startling difference. Kermit’s statement reads: “After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Miss Piggy and I made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television (“The Muppets”/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter. Thank you for your understanding.”
Miss Piggy’s statement said almost the exact same thing except for one brow-raising sentence. “This is our only comment on this private matter,” her statement reads. Then, she goes on to add “… unless we get the right offer.” This minor alteration has then since inspired many speculations as to why the two broke up.
Some think that the two are just performing a publicity stunt. Considering the fortuitous timing of their announcement with ABC’s preparation to launch a new Muppet show, the people really can’t be blamed for such an assumption. The fact that Kermit’s statement so obviously plugged said show in his statement only gave more validation to the speculation as well.
Meanwhile, others think there’s a third party involved – a rumor inspired by a seemingly harmless tweet from Emmy Rossum. Her tweet reads: “UGH. I’m SO upset. That being said, we DO look good together, IMHO.” Safe to say, tweeting her willingness to be Kermit’s new beau with a side-by-side photo of the two of them doesn’t really give justice to how upset Rossum is about the whole situation.
On the other hand, a comment on Kermit’s post suggests that the third party might be coming from Miss Piggy’s side instead. A Facebook user commented that Fozzie Bear’s (a fellow muppet) car has been spotted in Miss Piggy’s driveway for some days now, emphasizing that the car would be spotted in “very early mornings.” However, the ex-lovers did admit that this rumor has barely been validated.
For those who don’t know, ABC’s The Muppets will air in September. The show will be a mockumentary featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Miss Piggy’s late night show. Kermit has been reported to be the acting executive producer of Miss Piggy’s late night show. Talk about awkward.
