The last time Lil Wayne made an announcement, the less than detailed message caused more confusion than excitement. This time, the rapper kept his announcement short and straight to the point- he is dropping his Free Weezy album on July 4th. Now that Wayne has joined Tidal as a co-owner, there is a possibility Free Weezy will be released exclusively through Tidal. The possibility of the project only being available through Tidal, definitely won’t sit well with Wayne’s fans who don’t have a membership with the music streaming company- especially since his loyal fans have been patiently awaiting the release of Tha Carter V album.
Wayne has released ten studio albums, which include Tha Block Is Hot, Lights Out, 500 Degreez, Tha Carter, Tha Carter II, Rebirth, I Am Not a Human Being, Tha Carter IV, and I Am Not a Human Being II. His Young Money imprint released three albums including We Are Young Money, Rich Gang(with Cash Money), and Rise of an Empire. The rapper’s studio debut, The Block Is Hot, was released in 1999. It entered the Billboard 200 at Number 3, after selling over 100,000 copies in its first week. The platinum-selling project was led the singles “Tha Block is Hot” and “Respect Us,” and it features guest appearances by Juvenile, BG, Big Tymers, Turk, and Hot Boys. When Tha Block Is Hot was released, it was a representation of how dominant Cash Money Records had become. Today, most of the artists from Cash Money’s “glory days” have left the company, and Wayne is currently trying to get his contract with the label terminated.
Even though Wayne was a well-respected rapper in the music industry, his career with to another level with the release of Tha Carter III album. The project went to Number 1 on three US charts including the Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Top Rap Albums, and it also topped the albums chart in Canada. With production from Swizz Beatz, Kanye West, Jim Jonsin, and David Banner, the album sold over three million copies in the US. The singles “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” “Got Money,” and “Mrs. Officer” were all dropped from Tha Carter III. The project is widely considered as one of the best hip-hop albums of its time.
