“Are you ready to go back in time?” This is the question asked by the producers of 90s Fest, a summer music festival that aims to make you feel as if you are reliving your “glory days” in the 1990s. The festival will launch in Brooklyn (NY) on September 12th, becoming the first ever 1990s-themed music event of its kind. The legendary festival will feature some of the biggest artists of the 1990s era, including Smash Mouth, Naughty By Nature, Lisa Loeb, Blind Melon, Tonic, and Coolio. Paula Shore, who became a household name as a VJ (or VeeJay) on MTV, will host the event.
Along with live performances, 90s Fest will also feature several attractions from the 1990s era. Among those attractions will be a Nintendo Mario Kart tournament, as well as an attempt from the festival attendees to break the Guinness World Record for the largest Macarena dance in history. The single “Macarena” was released in 1994 by Los del Rio. The single became one of the biggest hit songs that year, and it sold over four million copies in the US. It was also named the “Greatest One-Hit Wonder of All Time” by VH1. Tickets for the 90s Fest are available now online.
Smash Mouth‘s band name may be in the news following frontman Steve Harwell’s “meltdown” onstage, but his actions don’t defame the impact the band has had on music. Smash Mouth have dropped seven projects, which includeFush Yu Mang, Astro Lounge, Smash Mouth, Get the Picture?, The Gift of Rock, Summer Girl, and Magic. Even though their light doesn’t shine as bright as it used to, Smash Mouth’s songs “All Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun” are widely considered as the most popular songs in the 1990s. “All Star” went to Number 1 on the Adult Top 40 and the Mainstream Top 40 chart. “Walkin’ on the Sun” also reached the Number 1 spot on the Adult Top 40 and Modern Rocks Tracks chart.
The popular hip-hop group Naughty By Nature have released seven albums. Those projects include Independent Leaders, Naughty by Nature, 19 Naughty III, Poverty’s Paradise, Nineteen Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury, IIcons, and Anthem Inc. Perhaps their most recognized album was their self-titled effort, which was dropped in 1991. Naughty by Nature featured the singles “O.P.P. (song),” “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” and “Uptown Anthem.” To date, the album has sold over one million copies.
